Hormel Foods is a multinational company that was founded in 1891. It’s headquartered in Austin, Minnesota, and is one of the largest food companies in the world. Some of Hormel Foods’ other products you may know include Spam, Jennie-O turkey, and Dinty Moore stew.

Skippy peanut butter has been around since 1932 and was originally made by the Joe Crossley Company. In 1954, Hormel Foods bought the Joe Crossley Company, and Skippy has been a part of the Hormel family ever since.

Hormel Foods is known for its high-quality, affordable products. The company has won numerous awards over the years, including being named one of the “World’s Most Admired Companies” by Fortune magazine in both 2013 and 2014.

Hormel Foods is a publicly traded company and has over 20,000 employees.

WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS IN SKIPPY PEANUT BUTTER

When you compare Skippy to other brands of peanut butter, it’s not the worst option out there. In fact, Skippy actually has less sugar than some other brands. However, it does have more sodium than other brands. And while the amount of saturated fat in Skippy isn’t too bad, it’s still something to be aware of.

I will say the all-natural peanut butter option they have is the healthiest of all options. When you look at the ingredients, all you will see are Roasted peanuts, sugar, palm oil, and salt.

This is great, but I recommend if you want ABSOLUTE NATURAL peanut butter, then you go with the one I do. It is called Laura Scudders old fashioned natural peanut butter.

HOW SKIPPY PEANUT BUTTER IS MADE

The Peanuts are first shelled and then roasted. After they are roasted, the peanuts are ground, and the resulting mixture is stirred until it becomes smooth.

Peanut butter is typically made from roasted peanuts, but raw peanuts can also be used.

Peanuts absorb a lot of oil when they are ground, so manufacturers often add hydrogenated vegetable oil to increase the spreadability of the peanut butter and extend its shelf life. Peanut butter can be crunchy or smooth, depending on whether or not the peanuts are coarse or finely ground.

Peanut butter can also be flavored with salt, sweeteners, chocolate, or other ingredients. I have never tried to make my own, but I have a friend that has. If you want to, here is a basic process.

  1. Roast the peanuts on a sheet for about 10 minutes at 350F.
  2. Process the peanuts by adding them to a blender or food processor.
  3. Add in things like sweeteners, salt, or oils.
  4. Store the peanut butter in an air-tight container in your refrigerator.

HOW TO CHOOSE A HEALTHY PEANUT BUTTER

I look for three different things when choosing peanut butters. To me, these are the most important.

  1. Added Sugar is what your want to watch out for, not natural sugar.
  2. The Ingredient list length of peanut butters should be as short as possible.
  3. Added Oils like Hydrogenated oil. They are sometimes added by peanut butter brands to help make the peanut butters last longer.

Yes, you could put a lot of thought into narrowing down the best peanut butters at the supermarket. Or you could just spend three seconds and see if the ingredients say just peanuts.

WHICH BRAND OF CHUNKY OR CREAMY PEANUT BUTTER IS THE HEALTHIEST

For me, this is an easy choice. Any creamy peanut butter or chunky that doesn’t have a lot of junk added in. I have only used three different kinds of peanut butter for the last fifteen years, and I will share them with you.

  1. Laura Scudders is what I have been using for years. I love the creamy peanut butter option and sometimes put it in my protein shake for some extra calories. With only three grams of saturated fat, no cholesterol, and Eight grams per serving. This makes Laura Scudders a great choice.
  2. 365 by Whole Foods Market is on this list because most people live by one and could just go pick it up instead of ordering it. Whole foods peanut butters are a very nice option. They only have 2.5 grams of saturated fat, zero cholesterol, and eight grams of protein.
  3. Crazy Richards 100% All Natural should be considered just based on the name! Crazy Richard does not add any salt or sugar and is gluten-free. Also, only 2.5 grams of saturated fat and zero cholesterol. Like most, it has a good amount of protein per service at eight grams.

Important to know when looking at the ingredients label fat section. You will see a good amount of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. These are actually good fats. I wrote a separate article on what are the good and bad fats, which you can check out.

It is the saturated fat you want to keep an eye on.

Hydronated vegetable oils are used in peanut butter for a variety of reasons. I recommend not buying natural peanut butter with hydronated oils.

Second, hydrogenated vegetable oils improve the texture of the peanut butter, making it smoother and creamier.

Hydronation prevents the separation of the peanut butter into its oil and protein components. For these reasons, hydronated vegetable oils are essential in most commercially-produced peanut butters.

Hydrogenated vegetable oils are created when vegetable oils are treated with hydronation, a process that involves adding hydrogen to the oil. This process changes the structure of the oil, making it more solid at room temperature.

As a result, hydronated vegetable oils are often used in place of butter or margarine in recipes that call for a solid fat.

Yes, hydronation can extend the shelf life of oils, but it also creates trans fats, which have been linked to various health problems. For this reason, I recommend avoiding foods that contain hydronated vegetable oils.

So, is this world-famous peanut butter healthy? Yes, it is but not every one of their creamy peanut butter and chunky flavors! If health is the most important thing for you, then go with the all-natural option. Just remember, that some peanut butter brands might be well-known but not very healthy.
